Memories of the School Day at the Shrubbery Secondary Modern School for Girls 5th Year 1962 The Shrubbery Secondary Modern School for Girls opened in 1954 and occupied the extensive grounds of 32 acres of parkland. The 1000 girls at the Shrubbery were divided into six houses named after Abbeys in Hampshire and all members wore the relevant button in the colour of their House. They were as follows:
School Dinners School Dinners were taken in our Houses, with two from years four and five, two from year three, two from year two, and two from year one. Rooms 12, 13 and 14 were used, plus two in the Annexe. One teacher sat on each table for one week. Prefect Duties Every Tuesday the Prefects took morning assembly and read the lesson. Two prefects were responsible to take their classes into assembly in the School Hall. It's wonderful to catch up with all the girls that used to be in the 5th Year in 1962 who attended the Shrubbery Secondary School for Girls in Basingstoke, and it is amazing how we still meet as firm friends, as if the intervening years have melted away, and we are again life long friends with many shared experiences, with friendships made in those classrooms, which have stayed with us until the present day.
