Fire Engine Workshops

Allsorts Car Club Line up at the Fire and Rescue Workshops in Winchester

The Allsorts Motor Club, based in Alresford, Hants, were invited along to the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service Workshops, based at Easton Lane, Winchester.

Allsorts members cars included models from the 60's to the 90's eras including Austin Healy 100/6, Jaguar XK120, Morris8 Saloon, Morgan Plus4, 2 x Morris 8 Tourers, Riley Falcon and MG TF.

After the Second World War, the Workshops were moved from Kings Worthy, and the present workshops are still those 1950's buildings which have been renovated over past years.  The skills of coach building and engineering maintenance have been preserved, allowing every new fire engine to be custom built by expertise gained with experience in fire fighting.  The Allsorts Car Club members were able to appreciate the skills and talents of the staff of the Hampshire and Fire  Rescue Service Workshop who build each fire engine to be used by the  Hampshire Fire Stations.

The whole fleet is  maintained on a regular basis  from the Workshop and its Mobile Engineering Workshop operates from the Depot in  Easton Lane in Winchester.  The Deputy Chief Fire Office, Alan House, gave an informative and entertaining talk as he guided the members of the Allsorts Car Club around the workshops and ladder testing units.

Members had many questions regarding the use of the hoses and pumps to deal with household fires, including even the stirrup pump which is used on rare occasions  for chimney fires.  Alan House, also, expertly demonstrated the use of equipment  stored on every fire engine to free casualties in  motor accidents on our roads and motorways.

Every member of the Allsorts Car Club appreciated the many skills demonstrated on the tour of the workshops and wished the Management well in their efforts to maintain this excellent service within Hampshire and Fire and Rescue.
